The Architecture of Nottoway
This big bueatiful house did not statrt out that way originally. It started out as just a couple pieces of wood. The construction on this house took many years. Mr. randolph wanted it to have the newest appliances that were just becoming available to those who could afford it. The architect for this house was Henry Howard who was a very well known architect at this point in time.
As you can tell the house models the White House with the curved wall. This is said to have taken many years to do. The boards had to be curved by hand and each board too about six years.
Many of the moldings in the house were hand done as well. They were made of mud, clay, horse hair, and spanish moss. A picture of the ornate moldings is below.The frezee work is known as Bousigere. It cost around $1901.
